Five Little Ducks

Five Little Ducks

“Five Little Ducks” is a popular as well as traditional counting rhyme, The rhyme also has an associated finger play. Canadian children’s folk singer Raffi released it as a single from the Rise and Shine album. Denise Fleming’s 2016 picture book 5 Little Ducks tells a re-imagined version of the song.

Learning and saying this rhyme together can help your child learn skills which will support their development and growth in many areas. It is a fun way to introduce counting and patterns. Help your child count along and guess how many ducks will come back the next time they all go out.

In Five Little Ducks, use emotion to tell the story – for example, shock when one of the little ducks goes missing each time; sadness when all of the little ducks are gone; excitement when all five little ducks come back, imagine your five fingers are the little ducks and your other hand is the mother duck quacking.

“Five Little Ducks” Lyrics

Five little ducks went out one day,
Over the hills and far away,
Mother duck said “Quack, quack, quack, quack”
But only four little ducks came back.

Four little ducks went out one day,
Over the hills and far away,
Mother duck said “Quack, quack, quack, quack.”
But only three little ducks came back.

Three little ducks went out one day,
Over the hills and far away,
Mother duck said “Quack, quack, quack, quack.”
But only two little ducks came back.

Two little ducks went out one day,
Over the hills and far away,
Mother duck said “Quack, quack, quack, quack.”
But only one little duck came back.

One little duck went out one day,
Over the hills and far away,
Mother duck said “Quack, quack, quack, quack.”
But none of the five little ducks came back.

Sad mother duck went out one day,
Over the hills and far away,
The sad mother duck said “Quack, quack, quack.”
And all of the five little ducks came back.
