वन्दे मातरम्

राष्ट्रीय गीत ‘वंदे मातरम्’ की रचना बंगाल के महान साहित्यकार श्री बंकिम चन्द्र चट्टोपाध्याय द्वारा सन् 1876 में की गई थी, लेकिन इसका सर्वप्रथम समावेश उन्होंने अपने सुप्रसिद्ध उपन्यास ‘आनंदमठ’ में सन् 1880 में किया था। ‘आनंदमठ’ उपन्यास के माध्यम से प्रचलित हुए इस गीत का स्थान अपने देश को मातृभूमि मानने की भावना को प्रज्वलित करने वाले गीतों में सबसे पहला है।

उन दिनों जहां बंगाल में ‘बंग-भंग’ का आंदोलन अपने पूरे उफान पर था वहीं दूसरी ओर महात्मा गाँधी के असहयोग आंदोलन ने लोकभावना को जाग्रत कर दिया था, आज़ादी के सेनानियों के लिए यह गीत एक पवित्र मंत्र बन गया था। ‘वंदे मातरम्’ के दो शब्दों ने उस समय देशवासियों के दिलों में देशभक्ति के प्राण फूँक दिए थे और आज भी इसी देशभक्ति की भावना से ‘वंदे मातरम्’ देश के कोने कोने में गाया जाता है।

‘वंदे मातरम्’ मूल गीत के प्रथम दो पद संस्कृत में तथा शेष पद बांग्ला भाषा में थे। राष्ट्रकवि रवींद्रनाथ टैगोर ने यह गीत बंगाली शैली में लय और संगीत के साथ पहली बार 1896 में कांग्रेस के कलकत्ता अधिवेशन में गाया। इस गीत का अंग्रेज़ी में अनुवाद अरबिंदो घोष ने तथा उर्दू में आरिफ़ मोहम्मद ख़ान ने किया। ‘वंदे मातरम्’ मूल गीत के प्रथम पद को सरकारी गीत के रूप में मान्यता मिली है और इसे राष्ट्रीय गीत का दर्ज़ा देकर इसकी न केवल धुन बल्कि गीत की अवधि तक संविधान सभा द्वारा तय की गई है, जो 52 सेकेण्ड है।

मैं आपके सामने नतमस्‍तक होता हूँ। ओ माता,
पानी से सींची, फलों से भरी,
दक्षिण की वायु के साथ शान्‍त,
कटाई की फ़सलों के साथ गहरा,
माता!

उसकी रातें चाँदनी की गरिमा में प्रफुल्लित हो रही हैं,
उसकी ज़मीन खिलते फूलों वाले वृक्षों से बहुत सुंदर ढकी हुई है,
हंसी की मिठास, वाणी की मिठास,

Mother, I bow to thee!
Rich with thy hurrying streams,
bright with orchard gleams,
Cool with thy winds of delight,
Dark fields waving Mother of might,
Mother free.

Who hath said thou art weak in thy lands
When the sword flesh out in the seventy million hands
And seventy million voices roar
Thy dreadful name from shore to shore?
With many strengths who art mighty and stored,
To thee I call Mother and Lord!
Though who savest, arise and save!
To her I cry who ever her foeman drove
Back from plain and Sea
And shook herself free.

Thou art wisdom, thou art law,
Thou art heart, our soul, our breath
Though art love divine, the awe
In our hearts that conquers death.
Thine the strength that nervs the arm,
Thine the beauty, thine the charm.
Every image made divine
In our temples is but thine.
